Located in the Middletown area of New Jersey, one of the best-kept secrets of the East Coast, is an opulent luxury destination that will awaken your senses. One look at this majestic home and you’ll be taken back to the age of royalty and courtesans. This extraordinary residence awaits you on Navesink River Road in Red Bank, New Jersey, and is available for sale through Absolute Auction, Selling with No Reserve on June 12.

Your opportunity to own a Rare Architectural Masterpiece!

Driving along Navesink River Road, you’ll immediately feel the history of the area. Most of the homes here were built in the early 1900s, and they now welcome the likes of Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, and corporate CEOs. Located just across the way from this stately abode is the Navesink Country Club, a four-season, family-friendly private club that offers golfing, tennis, swimming, and ice-skating.

Follow the meandering drive and be greeted by the majestic 12,000-square-foot manor. Originally built in 1916 as the Andrew V. Stout residence, architect John Russell Pope created this masterpiece by integrating the English Georgian style popular between 1720 and 1840. The Stout House stands today with only minimal changes since its construction and has been renamed Hye Crest House by its current owners, who have lived in the home for the past 29 years.

Offered to the Market for the first time in over 28 years!

Picturesque grounds and timeless architecture contribute to this magnificent estate with more than 250 feet of private, unobstructed waterfront views. Some of the home’s highlights include gable-end chimneys and parapets. Copper flashing surrounds the graduated hand-split slate roof that has been meticulously replaced by the only qualified tradesman in the state of New Jersey. A wide limestone belt course separates the first and second stories of the main house, and the graceful flowing spiral staircase in the main foyer entrance was one of Pope’s signature marks. Flooring throughout this grand residence is a combination of polished oak wood floors and 24-inch imported Italian marble, and all of the flooring and mahogany doors are original.

The residence contains three floors plus a basement, and when you enter through the foyer, you’ll be greeted by the elegant spiral staircase and 12-foot ceilings on the main floor with original plaster crown molding. Enjoy one charming room after another, from the home study, formal living room, dining room, and family garden room to the kitchen. Later additions to the home are a breakfast room and stunning sunroom with a one-of-a-kind hand-painted mural octagonal ceiling. The sunroom opens up to the pool and private back patio, with breathtaking views of the Navesink River.

While the estate is timeless, its availability is limited.

The formal dining room features a striking late-Georgian mantel with a complementary chair rail. Above the mantel is a unique weathervane, with its indicator on the wall over an original map of Monmouth County, mounted when the home was built. It is connected to a weathervane on the roof of the property, so without having to step outside, you can see the wind’s direction. This architectural highlight was inspired by a Thomas Jefferson weathervane at the Monticello home.

In the kitchen is one of the home’s four fireplaces as well as an indoor grill area and unique original Silver Safe built right into the wall and discreetly hidden. Off the kitchen are the laundry room and elevator.

The second floor boasts an array of bedrooms and additional living space. The master bedroom has not one but two master baths, its own sitting area, and fireplace. French doors open onto a delicately designed wrought iron balcony where you can enjoy peaceful views of the property and river beyond. Welcome visitors to the separate caretaker’s apartment, accessible from the second level or through its own entrance off the garage.

The third floor offers yet more of the total eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Twin attics could be used for storage or converted into playrooms.

The basement provides a window into the past, complete with the original coal shoot that was used for exterior coal deliveries. Store your wine collection in the dedicated wine room, and the handyman in the family will be completely at home in the workshop.

The possibilities are endless, but first, you have to make it yours.

The estate’s 4.7 acres feature beautifully landscaped English gardens with a pond and mature trees that include dogwoods, pears, cherries, and Japanese maples. Enjoy the view along 250 feet of spectacular river frontage, which includes your very own boathouse and private dock. Cool off in the negative-edge pool with a charming waterfall feature. Extend your use of the pool with the available heating or relax in the Jacuzzi in cooler months and appreciate the amazing surroundings and stunning views of the Navesink River year round.

Hye Crest House is located within a short drive of two high-speed luxury ferry services that take commuters, shoppers, and theater lovers to Wall Street or Midtown Manhattan. Also within minutes are public beaches and private beach clubs along the Jersey Shore. For the horse or nature lover, there are miles of wooded trails and beautiful equestrian centers.

Architectural Significance

John Russell Pope designed many notable buildings in Washington, DC, including the National Archives and Records Administration, the Jefferson Memorial, and the west building of the National Gallery of Art. He also was the architect for many prominent residents of the age, building homes for the Vanderbilts, among others. Pope was considered to be the 20th century’s foremost architect of Georgian Revival country homes. The Hye Crest House was originally built as a residence for Andrew V. Stout, and Pope incorporated many of the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance components he studied during his time in Italy.

Neighborhood & Area

Located in central Monmouth County along the New Jersey shore, Middletown Township, Red Bank, is a hidden gem just an hour’s drive from New York City. The area along the Navesink banks is one of the most affluent in the state. Due to its proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and the river, boating, sailing, and fishing are popular outdoor activities during the warmer months. Residents also enjoy hiking and nature walks in Sandy Hook and Gateway National Park.

Red Bank itself has roots that date back to the 1600s when English settlers slowly migrated inland and fishing constituted the bulk of the town’s economy, making Red Bank a thriving port. The charming downtown features brick sidewalks, Victorian street lamps, top-notch antiquing, art galleries, funky boutiques, dining, and nightlife. Take in a concert or play at the Count Basie Theatre, where locals Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi host an annual charity concert.

Year-round events help to create the community feel of Red Bank. In June, the annual “Riverfest” Jazz Festival draws approximately 160,000 visitors. The town also hosts New Jersey's largest fireworks display every Independence Day, and during Christmastime, thousands of lights adorn the streets, transforming the area into a winter wonderland.
